Ketamine Therapy FAQs

What is ketamine therapy?
Ketamine is an FDA-approved anesthetic that, at low doses, has been shown to rapidly reduce symptoms of depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar depression, and suicidal thoughts when other treatments haven’t worked.

How does ketamine work?
Ketamine acts on the brain’s glutamate system, increasing neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new and healthier connections. This creates a window of flexibility where symptoms lift and therapy can be more effective.

What happens during an infusion?
You’ll be in a private treatment room with continuous monitoring. The infusion lasts about 40 minutes, followed by a recovery period. A provider stays with you throughout the session to ensure comfort and safety.

Will I hallucinate?
No - most patients feel dreamlike, relaxed, or detached (“dissociative”) rather than hallucinatory. These effects wear off within a couple of hours.

What are the side effects?
Common side effects include mild dizziness, nausea, or blurred vision, which usually fade within hours. Rarely, blood pressure or heart rate may increase, which is why we monitor closely throughout.

How quickly will I feel better?
Some patients notice improvement within 24 hours of their first infusion. Others may need several treatments before experiencing relief.

How many treatments will I need?
Some patients notice benefit after just one infusion, but the best results usually come from a series of treatments (often six over 2–3 weeks), followed by individualized maintenance.

Is ketamine therapy safe?
Yes. When given at low doses in a medical setting with proper monitoring, ketamine is considered safe for most patients. We carefully review your medical and psychiatric history before starting treatment.

Do I need to stop my medications?
Most medications are safe to continue. Some (such as high doses of benzodiazepines) may reduce ketamine’s effectiveness. We’ll review your medications during your consultation.

Do I need a driver?
Yes. You will not be able to drive, work, or make major decisions until the day after treatment. Please arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home.

How much does ketamine therapy cost?

At Seagrass, we believe in keeping treatment simple and transparent. Each ketamine infusion session is $400 and includes:

  • A private, comfortable treatment environment

  • Continuous medical monitoring for safety

  • Psychiatric oversight by a board-certified Psychiatric provider

  • One 30 minute follow-up integration session within 24–72 hours to help you process and apply insights

This fee is all-inclusive with no additional charges. We accept all payment methods. While insurance does not currently cover ketamine therapy, we provide superbills you may submit for possible reimbursement. Package pricing is also available for patients completing a full series of treatments.

We give a 25% discount to military with ID or DD-214 (active and former) & First-Responders with badge (Police/ Fire/ EMS).

Is ketamine therapy right for me?
It may be if you’ve struggled with depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar depression, anhedonia, or suicidal thoughts that have not improved with traditional treatments. Every patient receives a thorough evaluation before beginning care.

Ketamine Therapy FAQ – For Therapists

Can my patient continue therapy with me while receiving ketamine?
Yes. In fact, we encourage it. Ketamine increases neuroplasticity, making therapy even more effective. With patient consent, we will coordinate infusion timing with your sessions to maximize integration and progress.

Will I still be my patient’s primary therapist?
Absolutely. Our role is to provide safe, evidence-based ketamine treatment and integration support. You remain the patient’s primary therapeutic relationship.

Do you provide integration therapy if the patient doesn’t have a therapist?
Yes. If a patient does not already have a therapist, we provide integration sessions to help them process their ketamine experience. If they already have a therapist, we coordinate with you directly.

How will I be kept informed about my patient’s care?
With patient consent, we provide updates after the initial series and as needed. We are happy to share progress notes and coordinate scheduling to align with your treatment plan.

Can ketamine replace psychotherapy?
No. Ketamine is most effective when combined with therapy. It opens a “window of opportunity” for growth, but the real work of change comes through integration and ongoing therapeutic support.

What diagnoses are you treating with ketamine?
At Seagrass, we provide ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, severe anxiety, bipolar depression, anhedonia, substance use disorder (as adjunctive care), and suicidal ideation.
